It is also the first animated Spider-Man series to focus on his time as a teenager in high school, as it was originally in the comics, rather than portray him in college and beyond like in all of the previous shows. The series is based on the early comic stories by Stan Lee & Steve Ditko, although it also draws from the film series, Ultimate Spider-Man, more recent comics, and even Spider-Man: The Animated Series. ![]() The series features Peter Parker as a geeky Ordinary High-School Student who was bitten by a genetically-altered spider and gained spider powers during the previous school year and spent all summer as Spider-Man. The Spectacular Spider-Man is a short-lived animated series based on the Marvel Comics' web-slinging superhero and developed for television by Greg Weisman of Gargoyles fame.
